Shorebird Habitat Protection Program

Department of Conservation & Recreation, Mass Audubon • Massachusetts Shoreline

The competition between humans (and their dogs) and shorebirds for beachspace is a major challenge for the coastal ecologists at the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation and Mass Audubon. We led these agencies in a collaboration that produced a messaging strategy centered around families—human families sharing space with Plover families. We intentionally created illustrations showing how difficult the small birds are to see against their sandy backdrop. The program is being adopted by all seaboard states and Canada and is in five languages, which are QR-code accessible.
