Raymond E. Shaw Elementary School

T2 Architecture • Millbury Public Schools, Massachusetts

Located in the Blackstone Valley, the town of Millbury has a new elementary school serving grades 3 thru 6; and when T2 Architecture, Dodson/Flinker and Content•Design team up on a school project, going to school will be fun! T2 balances a sense of play with function in the architectural design; Peter Flinker creates a fantastic playground and site; and Content•Design communicates ideas of history and community. Colorful portals with historical references welcome students to The cafeteria program celebrates the Woolie’s school spirit (the team mascot is a sheep) and serious discussion of what is recyclable and what is not.

Outside, “Physics at Play” informs students about forces exerted when they slide, spin, or swing. A curated meadow outside the entry identifies native pollinating plants and other species, including underground mice. In another graphic panel, runnels that turn a waterwheel are linked to the water-driven mills that made Millbury a manufacturing center. Finally, the luscious woods surrounding the school are interpreted for species and natural landmarks.
