The Locker of Memory

Jungfernhof Concentration Camp Site • Riga, Latvia

Artist Karen Frostig is a painter and educator, but Content•Design engaged with her as a public memory artist. She was the artistic director of the Vienna Project, a social action project making visible the Austrian victims of the Holocaust. The Jungfernof project is effort to create a permanent memorial to the approximately 4,000 German and Austrian jews murdered there. As part of this Karen envisioned for the ceremony commemorating the site.

She approached Content•Design with the challenge of incorporating the names of the victims within a rectangle on an undetermined shroud size. In addition, assist in the border design, implementation, and reveal ceremony planned at Brandeis University. It was an honor to work with Karen and her team, Jennifer Varekamp, Fashion Design Department Head at MassArt, and Emily Moughan, the fashion designer who created the border embroidery.
